Choosing plants was a
challenge, as deer were drawn to the golf course itself, and the new garden,
as well. We used many California natives, with a few other "deer tolerant"
varieties planted alongside. The Monterey Pine forest that provided the
large existing trees had been badly damaged by drought and then pine
beetles, so an new underplanting of pines was also added to provide for a
succession forest. Redbuds, Oregon Grape, Flowering Currant, Sword Fern,
and other shade loving perennials were introduced as understory plantings.
The sunnier acre that surrounded the house featured curvilinear beds filled
with many Mediterranean style shrubs and perennials. |
