BACKGROUND
For more information, please visit the Official Web Site of the California Garden and Landscape History Society.

The California Garden & Landscape History Society (CG&LHS) is a private, non-profit organization dedicated to the celebration of the beauty, wealth, and diversity of California gardens and landscapes.

PURPOSE:

  • To encourage and promote interest in, study of, and education about California garden and landscape history.
  • To identify, document and promote preservation/restoration of gardens and landscapes depicting California's culture and history.
  • To collect and/or coordinate resources and expertise about the history of California's gardens and landscapes.

Founded in 1995 by 25 attendees at its first organizational meeting, its membership now totals around 150, with representatives from as far away as Australia and England. The interests of the members are as varied as the plant life of California. We have landscape architects and designers, garden directors, historians and historical preservationists, writers, librarians, gardeners, and plant lovers of all kinds among our ranks.

ACTIVITIES AND PROGRAMS
The activities of the Society are focused on four broad areas: education of members and the public, information sharing, research, and promotion of preservation efforts. In support of these goals, annual meetings are held for the entire membership, alternately in northern and southern California.

Meetings always include presentations by experts in landscape history, preservation, or other themes related to our purposes; resource sharing by members; an in-depth look at a library or archives which can aid the researcher; and tours of private and public gardens which tie into the meeting theme and have historical significance.

Members and others are encouraged to submit original research, book reviews, and news to the Society's quarterly publication Eden.

The organization cooperates with Wave Hill in New York by contributing records to the Catalog of Landscape Records in the United States, a project of the American Garden and Landscape History Program.
